Our methodology ↗

This elliptical calorie calculator offers two effort settings and keeps the assumptions visible. Enter your weight and the time spent moving, then choose the category that reasonably matches the session. It does not infer effort from a brand-specific level or stride count.

For a 170 lb example, 30 minutes gives about 202 total kcal at the moderate setting or 364 at the vigorous setting. The corresponding active estimates are about 162 and 324 kcal. Those are two modeled scenarios, not the upper and lower limits of what an individual will burn.

Changing resistance, cadence and use of the moving handles can change your workload. If you alternate easy and hard intervals, apply each setting only to its own time segment. Do not count a recovery minute as vigorous just because the overall workout felt demanding.

Total kcal = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × moving minutes
Active kcal = (MET − 1) × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × moving minutes

A little more clarity.

How many calories does 30 minutes on an elliptical burn?

At 170 lb, the moderate setting gives about 202 total kcal and the vigorous setting about 364. Use your own weight and effort setting rather than treating either example as a universal result.

What machine resistance level should I enter?

This tool uses effort categories instead of machine levels. There is no universal mapping from a numbered resistance level to one of these MET values.

Are the moving handles included?

The categories describe overall elliptical exercise; there is no separate adjustment for handle use. They cannot isolate the contribution of your arms.

Does an hour burn twice the 30-minute estimate?

The calculation doubles when you double time and keep the same weight and category. In practice, the comparison assumes that the effort stays consistent for the full hour.

Keep exploring.
