Swimming calorie calculator
Estimate calories burned swimming by body weight, swim time, stroke and effort. Compare freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.

The numbers, explained.
Our methodology ↗Select the stroke and effort that describe your swimming segment, then enter body weight and moving time. The tool estimates energy for that segment. It does not turn pool length or lap count into minutes because swimmers cover the same distance at different speeds.
For a 170 lb example, 30 minutes of recreational freestyle returns about 235 total kcal and 194 active kcal. Fast freestyle gives a different estimate. “Recreational” and “training” settings describe separate categories; they are not labels for your skill or fitness.
A session with 10 minutes of breaststroke, 10 minutes of freestyle and several breaks is best split into its working parts. Sum matching total or active results afterward. Technique, water conditions and personal efficiency remain outside this simple model.

|---|---|---|
| Freestyle · recreational | 5.8 | 18240 |
| Freestyle · fast laps | 9.8 | 18230 |
| Backstroke · recreational | 4.8 | 18255 |
| Breaststroke · recreational | 5.3 | 18265 |
| Breaststroke · training | 10.3 | 18260 |
| Butterfly | 13.8 | 18270 |

A little more clarity.
How many calories does swimming for 30 minutes burn?
At 170 lb, recreational freestyle gives about 235 total kcal or 194 active kcal in this model. Your weight, stroke, effort and actual swimming time change that estimate.
Does breaststroke burn more than freestyle?
Compare the specific effort categories, not only the stroke names. Recreational breaststroke and training breaststroke use different values, as do recreational and fast freestyle.
Should I include rest between laps?
Exclude time resting at the wall from the moving duration. If your watch shows a 45-minute session but only 30 minutes of swimming, the moving-time estimate should use 30 minutes.
Can I calculate calories from laps alone?
Not with this model. Lap count alone does not identify pool length, duration or effort. Use your actual swimming time and choose the closest stroke category.
Keep exploring.
