Rowing machine power

Use average watts during the working segment. Stroke rate and the damper setting are not power measurements.

A model-based estimate, not a measurement. Your terrain, movement and individual physiology can change the result.

Our methodology ↗

Use this calculator for a stationary rowing ergometer. Enter body weight, the minutes spent rowing and the closest power category. A general vigorous option is available when you do not have watt data. These categories do not model rowing a boat outdoors.

A 170 lb example at 100–149 watts for 20 minutes returns about 202 total kcal and 175 active kcal. A different power band changes the category used in the formula. The steps between bands are a feature of this model, not sudden jumps in human energy use.

If your workout contains several intervals, use each interval’s working time and average watts. Exclude long rests. The damper setting and strokes per minute do not uniquely determine power, so the calculator does not ask for them.

Total kcal = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × moving minutes
Active kcal = (MET − 1) × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × moving minutes

Selected categories from the 2024 Adult Compendium. Values describe activity groups, not a personal metabolic measurement.

A little more clarity.

Can I use my 500 m split instead of watts?

This version accepts power categories. If your rowing monitor provides a watts view, use that. A split-to-power conversion depends on the equipment model, so the tool does not apply one to all rowers.

Is this a Concept2 calorie calculator?

It is a general MET-based rowing estimator, not an implementation of a particular manufacturer’s console algorithm. A branded monitor can report a different value.

Should I enter damper level or resistance?

No. Choose average watts or the general vigorous category. A numbered setting alone does not describe the power produced during your strokes.

Does this work for outdoor rowing?

The categories apply to a stationary rowing ergometer. Water, wind, boat and crew differences are not represented in this calculator.

Keep exploring.
