Walking time calculator
Estimate how long it takes to walk a mile, 5 km or your own route. Enter distance, average speed and stops to calculate moving and total time.
Your walking route
Use a pace you can sustain on this route. Hills and crossings may slow you down.
Added to moving time to estimate the full outing.
Moving time plus your planned stops.
This is a route-planning estimate. It does not model elevation, weather, traffic lights or fatigue.
The numbers, explained.
Our methodology ↗Use the walking time calculator to turn a route distance and sustainable moving speed into a time estimate. Add planned stops to see the total outing time. The speed input describes walking while you are moving, not an average that already includes pauses.
For example, 3 miles at 3 mph takes 60 minutes of moving time. Add a 10-minute break and the full outing becomes 70 minutes. If your recorded average speed already includes that stop, adding it again would count the delay twice.
The result is simple route arithmetic. It does not identify road crossings, elevation gain, heat or fatigue. Choose a speed that suits the route and your usual walking, and leave room for uncertainty when arrival time matters.
| Moving speed | Time for 1 mile | Time for 3 miles |
|---|---|---|
| 2 mph | 30 min | 90 min |
| 2.5 mph | 24 min | 72 min |
| 3 mph | 20 min | 60 min |
| 3.5 mph | 17 min 9 sec | 51 min 26 sec |
Constant-speed examples before adding pauses. These are scenarios, not recommended walking speeds.
A little more clarity.
How long does it take to walk a mile?
At 2 mph it takes 30 minutes; at 3 mph, 20 minutes; at 3.5 mph, about 17 minutes 9 seconds. Add any stops separately.
How long does it take to walk 5 km?
At 5 km/h, moving time is exactly one hour. Switch to metric units, enter 5 km and adjust the speed and stops for your route.
Can I include breaks?
Yes. Planned stops are added to moving time. Do not add the same pauses again if you are using a speed that already averages over the full elapsed time.
Does this account for uphill walking?
There is no elevation model here. Use a lower observed moving speed for a hillier route or calculate its sections separately.
Keep exploring.
