Steps to miles calculator
Convert steps to miles or kilometers using your step length, or switch to miles-to-steps mode. See your estimated steps per mile.
Steps & distance
One footfall to the next. A full stride contains two steps. The example is not a personal prediction.
Based on your entered step length.
A precise conversion still depends on an approximate step length. Measure it at the pace you intend to use.
The numbers, explained.
Our methodology ↗A step count becomes a distance estimate once you supply an average step length. This calculator converts steps to miles or kilometers and also works in reverse: choose the distance-to-steps tab to estimate the steps in a route.
At the example 26-inch step length, 10,000 steps cover about 4.10 miles, or 6.604 kilometers. One mile contains about 2,437 such steps. Change the length to 30 inches and the same 10,000 steps become about 4.73 miles. Neither length is a prediction for every walker.
For a more useful input, walk a known distance while counting every footfall and divide the distance by the count. Keep the pace similar to the walk you want to estimate. Mixing running steps and walking steps under a single measured length introduces an extra assumption.
| Steps | Miles at 26 in | Kilometers |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | 0.82 | 1.321 |
| 5,000 | 2.05 | 3.302 |
| 10,000 | 4.10 | 6.604 |
| 15,000 | 6.16 | 9.906 |

A little more clarity.
How many miles are 10,000 steps?
At a 26-inch step length, about 4.10 miles. The result changes in direct proportion to your step length. Enter a measured length to get a more relevant conversion.
How many steps are in a mile?
Divide 63,360 inches by your step length in inches. A 26-inch step gives about 2,437 steps per mile; a 30-inch step gives 2,112.
Can I convert miles to steps?
Yes. Switch to the miles-to-steps tab, enter the route distance and keep your measured step length. The result rounds the estimated number of steps to a whole number.
Can I use height instead of measuring?
This tool deliberately uses step length. Height-based shortcuts add another assumption and may not describe how you actually walk. The linked guide explains a short measurement procedure.
Keep exploring.
