Our methodology ↗

A step count alone does not tell us the distance or energy cost of your walk. This tool asks for body weight, walking steps, measured step length and an approximate pace. Each input contributes a different part of the estimate.

First, steps multiplied by step length gives distance. Dividing that distance by pace gives modeled walking time. The selected walking MET value then converts time and weight into an energy estimate.

The example step length of 26 inches is a starting value for demonstration, not a prediction from your height. Measure your own average step length over a known distance and use a pace that describes those steps.

For 10,000 steps at a 26-inch step length, the estimated distance is 4.10 miles. At 3 mph, that represents about 82 minutes of continuous walking. With the default 170 lb weight, the tool estimates about 421 total kcal. A mixed daily step total may not resemble one continuous walk.

Distance (km) = steps × step length (cm) ÷ 100,000
Time (minutes) = distance (km) ÷ speed (km/h) × 60
Total kcal = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes

These are arithmetic examples, not population-average step lengths. Step length can change with pace.

A little more clarity.

How many calories are 10,000 steps?

There is no single conversion. Using the example 170 lb, 26-inch step length and 3 mph pace gives about 421 total kcal. Changing step length changes the estimated distance and time.

Can I paste my whole daily step count?

You can, but the model assumes all those steps are walking at one pace and step length. Household movement, stairs, runs and very short bursts do not necessarily fit that assumption. A measured walk is a cleaner comparison.

Why does pace sometimes have an unexpected effect?

For a fixed step count and step length, faster walking takes less time while the MET category rises. The two effects interact. Discrete MET categories can create jumps; the output is not a finely calibrated speed curve.

Can I use running steps?

No. The energy model on this page uses walking categories. Running step length and movement costs are different.

Keep exploring.
